Why Your Business Needs a Website

Why Your Business Needs a Website

Instagram is not enough — here is what you are missing
Website

Most small businesses in the UAE start on Instagram. The ones that grow past a certain point all have one thing in common: a website.

If you run a business in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain or Ras Al Khaimah, you have probably heard someone say "just set up an Instagram page — that is all you need." And for the first few months, it might be true. But as your business matures and you want to reach customers beyond your existing followers, an Instagram page hits a ceiling that no amount of posting can break through.

This article explains why, with real examples from the UAE market.

Trap

The Instagram trap

Instagram is a brilliant marketing tool. It lets you show your products, share behind-the-scenes content and talk directly to your audience. But it was never designed to be your entire digital presence, and treating it as one creates three problems that get worse over time.

You do not own your audience. Every follower you have on Instagram belongs to Meta, not to you. If the algorithm changes — and it does, regularly — your posts stop reaching the people who chose to follow you. Businesses that relied on organic Instagram reach in 2020 saw their engagement drop by more than half by 2023 without changing anything about their content.

You are invisible to search engines. When someone in Sharjah searches Google for "best cleaning service near me" or "مطعم إيطالي في عجمان", Instagram profiles almost never appear in the top results. Websites do. If you do not have one, that customer goes to your competitor who does.

You cannot control the experience. On Instagram, your business sits between a cooking video and a meme. On a website, you control every pixel — the layout, the message, the call to action, the journey from "I am interested" to "take my money."

Search

How customers actually find businesses in the UAE

Google processes over 8.5 billion searches per day worldwide. In the UAE, it is the dominant search engine by a wide margin. When someone needs a service — an electrician, a photographer, a restaurant, a web developer — the first thing they do is search on Google.

The search is usually one of two types: a service plus a location ("website design Sharjah"), or a service in Arabic with a city name ("تصميم مواقع الشارقة"). In both cases, Google shows a mix of Google Business Profile listings (the map pack) and website results. Businesses without a website are at a severe disadvantage because they can only appear in the map pack — and even that requires a verified Google Business Profile, which most Instagram-only businesses have not set up.

A website with proper SEO, on the other hand, can appear in both the map pack and the organic results, effectively doubling your visibility. And unlike paid ads, once your website ranks, it keeps bringing customers for free, month after month.

Trust

Credibility and trust: what a website signals

Put yourself in your customer's shoes. You are comparing two companies that offer the same service. One has a professional website with a clear description of their work, testimonials, a portfolio and easy contact options. The other has an Instagram page with some posts and a "DM for price" in the bio. Which one feels more trustworthy?

Studies consistently show that customers judge a business's credibility within seconds of visiting its website. A professional site with your own domain name (not a free Wix subdomain) signals that you are established, invested in your brand and planning to be around for a while. It is the digital equivalent of a clean, well-furnished office.

This matters even more in the B2B space. Government entities, large companies and procurement departments in the UAE routinely check a supplier's website before issuing a purchase order. A maintenance company in Sharjah missed out on a government contract worth hundreds of thousands of dirhams because the procurement team could not find a website and moved on to the next bidder. That is not an unusual story — it happens every week.

Results

Real results from real businesses

A restaurant in the Northern Emirates had been relying on Instagram and word-of-mouth for two years. They had loyal regulars but could not break past 40 covers a night. After launching a simple website with their menu, location and an online reservation button, Google started showing them in "restaurants near me" results. Within three months, their nightly covers had nearly doubled, and most of the new customers said they found the restaurant through Google, not Instagram.

A home maintenance company in Ajman had a similar experience. They had been getting leads only through referrals and Instagram DMs — maybe five or six enquiries a week. They invested in a business website and a Google Business Profile, optimized for terms like "AC repair Ajman" and "plumber near me." Six months later, they were getting 20 to 30 enquiries a week through their website contact form alone, and they had to hire two additional technicians to handle the volume.

These are not exceptional cases. They are what happens when a business stops being invisible to the 90% of customers who search on Google before they search on Instagram.

Cost

The cost myth

The number one reason small businesses in the UAE delay building a website is the belief that it costs tens of thousands of dirhams. A decade ago, that may have been true. Today, a professional, mobile-optimized business website can be built in one to two weeks for a fraction of what most people expect.

Compare that to what you spend on Instagram ads. A modest Instagram campaign costs AED 1,500 to 3,000 per month, and the moment you stop paying, the traffic stops. A website, once built, keeps working for you indefinitely. The domain costs about AED 50 a year, hosting another AED 200 to 500 a year, and the SEO benefits compound over time — meaning your website becomes more valuable, not less, the longer it exists.

If you need something even simpler and faster, a landing page — a single, focused page designed around one service or one offer — can be ready in about a week and costs even less than a full website. It is a perfect starting point for businesses that want to test the waters before committing to a multi-page site.

Action

What to do next

If your business currently exists only on Instagram, here is a practical roadmap to fix that:

1. Register a domain name that matches your business name — ideally a .com or a .ae

2. Get a professional website built with your services, contact information and a clear call to action

3. Set up and verify your Google Business Profile with your address, phone number and business hours

4. Keep your Instagram — but use it to drive traffic to your website, not as a replacement for one
