How to Start a Business in Sharjah

A practical guide to trade licenses, free zones and digital presence
Sharjah

Sharjah is one of the most accessible places in the UAE to start a business, and more entrepreneurs are choosing it every year.

Sitting between Dubai and the Northern Emirates of Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah, Sharjah offers lower setup costs, a strategic location and a business-friendly regulatory environment. Whether you are a UAE national, a resident or an overseas investor, the emirate has a license type and a setup path that fits your plan.

This guide walks you through the practical steps: picking the right license, deciding between a free zone and the mainland, completing the registration, and doing the one thing most new businesses skip that ends up costing them the most customers — building a digital presence from day one.

License

Step 1: Choose the right trade license

Every business in Sharjah needs a trade license, and the type you need depends on what you do. There are three main categories.

Commercial licenses cover trading activities — importing, exporting, buying and selling goods. If you plan to open a shop, run an e-commerce store or distribute products, this is the one you need.

Professional licenses are for service-based businesses: consultancies, marketing agencies, IT companies, freelancers, health practitioners, tutors, accountants and similar professions. One advantage is that a professional license can be 100% foreign-owned on the mainland without needing a local partner.

Industrial licenses cover manufacturing and production — anything that transforms raw materials into finished goods. These are less common for first-time entrepreneurs but essential if you are setting up a workshop, a food production unit or a packaging facility.

If your business falls across two categories, you can usually add activities to a single license for a small extra fee rather than obtaining two separate ones. The Sharjah Economic Development Department (SEDD) can advise you on the right combination.

Setup

Step 2: Free zone or mainland?

This is the decision that shapes everything else — your ownership structure, your ability to trade locally and your costs.

Free zones offer 100% foreign ownership, zero corporate tax on qualifying income, simple setup procedures and ready-made office or flexi-desk solutions. Sharjah has several popular ones: the Sharjah Airport International Free Zone (SAIF Zone), Hamriyah Free Zone and Sharjah Publishing City, among others. The catch is that free zone companies cannot sell directly to customers inside the UAE without a local distributor or a dual license.

Mainland (SEDD) lets you trade freely anywhere in the UAE and take on government contracts. Since the UAE updated its Commercial Companies Law, most professional and commercial activities now allow 100% foreign ownership on the mainland too, which has removed the biggest historical reason to choose a free zone. Mainland licenses are issued by the Sharjah Economic Development Department.

If your customers are local consumers and businesses in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain or Ras Al Khaimah, a mainland license is usually the simpler choice. If you are focused on international trade, import-export or you need a prestigious address near the airport, a free zone makes sense.

Register

Step 3: Register your business

Once you have decided on a license type and a setup path, the registration process follows a predictable sequence.

Reserve your trade name. You can do this online through the SEDD portal or the free zone's website. The name must be unique, not already in use and must follow UAE naming rules (no offensive words, no names of countries or religions).

Submit your application. For a mainland license, apply through SEDD with your passport copy, visa, Emirates ID and your chosen business activities. For a free zone, the zone authority handles most of the paperwork and often has packages that include the visa, office space and license in a single bundle.

Get initial approval. SEDD or the free zone reviews your application. This usually takes one to five business days.

Lease your office or workspace. Mainland licenses require an Ejari-registered tenancy contract. Free zones provide their own spaces — from a flexi-desk at a few thousand dirhams a year to a full warehouse.

Collect your license. Pay the license fee, submit the tenancy contract and any remaining approvals, and you receive your trade license. Total time from first application to license in hand: as little as two weeks for a straightforward professional license, or three to four weeks for commercial or industrial setups.

Digital

Step 4: Build your digital presence from day one

Here is where most new businesses in Sharjah lose ground to their competitors. They spend weeks getting the license, furnishing the office and printing business cards — but they leave the website for "later." By the time "later" arrives, potential customers have already found a competitor who showed up first on Google.

Think about how you find a restaurant, a cleaning service or a supplier yourself. You search on Google. Your customers do the same. If your business does not appear in those search results, you do not exist for the vast majority of people looking for exactly what you sell.

An Instagram page is not a substitute for a website. It is a great marketing channel, but it does not show up consistently in Google search results, you cannot control the layout, you do not own the audience (Instagram can change its algorithm overnight), and it is nearly impossible to appear in "near me" searches with just a social media profile.

A professional business website does several things an Instagram page cannot:

Shows up in Google when people search for your services in Sharjah, Ajman or the Northern Emirates

Builds instant credibility with a professional look, your own domain name and a clear presentation of your offerings

Works 24/7 as your digital salesperson, collecting enquiries through contact forms and WhatsApp buttons even while you sleep

Gives you full control over your brand, your message and your customer data — no algorithm decides who sees your content

The cost is lower than most people think. A professional business website for a startup can be ready in one to two weeks and costs a fraction of a single month's rent. The return on that investment starts the moment your first customer finds you on Google instead of your competitor.

At DEVORA, we build business websites for startups in Sharjah and across the Northern Emirates — Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Ras Al Khaimah. We handle the design, the content structure, the SEO foundation and the Arabic version so your site reaches the local audience from day one.

Checklist

Your launch checklist

1. Decide: free zone or mainland

2. Choose your license type and business activities

3. Reserve your trade name

4. Submit your application and secure office space

5. Collect your trade license

6. Build your website and Google Business Profile before your first customer walks in

Starting a business in Sharjah is straightforward if you follow the steps in order. The license and registration are the part everyone focuses on, but the businesses that grow fastest are the ones that invest in their digital presence from the very first week. A website, a Google Business Profile and a clear online identity are not luxuries — they are the foundation that makes every other marketing effort work.
